Delivering a connected, safe, thriving Leigh town centre
Work is set to start later this year on the Market Place corridor in Leigh, to create a more connected, safer and accessible town centre.
This is just one of part of the multimillion pound We Love Leigh regeneration project, funded by UK government, also delivering an improved Civic Square, the refurbishment of Leigh Market and a grant scheme for local building owners.
Councillor Paul Prescott, cabinet portfolio holder for transport, said: “We are asking residents, businesses and communities in Leigh to take a look at this latest plan for Leigh town centre, and let us know what they think.
“The Market Place corridor project aims to make Leigh town centre feel more connected, by reducing the ‘split’ caused by the major road corridor running through the town.
“With plans to remove the central reservation, new crossing points, better surfacing and paving, increased greenery, and relocating bus stops to create a safe, attractive bustling environment - more people will be able to get across safely and enjoy time and events in town and on the multi-functional space at Civic Square.”
The Leigh Regeneration project has been moving on at pace this year. Local businesses are progressing with grant funding totalling more than £800,000 through the building grant scheme.
Over at Leigh Market, engagement continues with market traders on the proposals to refurbish the market and a survey encouraging residents to help shape the future of the market recently closed. Work is ongoing to bring all those results together, with market open and trading as normal until work starts in 2026.
Building on engagement last year, the Council is developing detailed designs for the transformation of Civic Square which will also start on site later this year.
Councillor David Molyneux MBE, Leader of Wigan Council, added: “This is a really exciting time for Leigh and there is a lot going on. We want to make sure that people who live, work, visit and shop in Leigh come with us on this journey, and these projects all come together to deliver a thriving, vibrant future for Leigh town centre.”
