What is a Refugee?

Refugee Week runs from 20th - 26th June 2022 and is a UK wide awareness week that celebrates the many contributions refugees make to society.

It also encourages understanding around some of the reasons people have to leave their home countries and the challenges they face when seeking safety.

Healing

This year, the theme of Refugee Week is 'Healing', a celebration of the human ability to recover from a painful experience or situation and start again. Many refugees completely understand what it means to have to start again and build a new life in a new country.

Healing impacts on all of us for different reasons, so it’s important that we all look after ourselves and each other, whatever our differences might be, during difficult times.

What’s happening for Refugee Week 2022?

Art, creativity, and community can all help us to heal.

'Kubatana' is a group of musicians and dancers originally from Zimbabwe. The individuals in the group came to the UK at different times and for lots of different reasons and they all now live in Wigan Borough.

This year the group performed at the Platinum Jubilee events in Pennington Hall Park and Mesnes Park. If you didn’t catch the performances in person, there will be footage on our social media channels during Refugee Week.

Sometimes, getting to know someone can help you realise that you have more in common than you might think.

We’ll be sharing some more local refugees’ stories during the week on social media.
