Residents crack the code in cyber escape room challenge

Group of people in an office meeting room

Overview

Residents from an engagement group, established by the Tenant Voice and Engagement team, took part in an innovative cyber escape room activity delivered by Fiona and Sam, Cyber Protect Officers from the Regional Organised Crime Unit (ROCU). The group had previously shared a keen interest in learning more about cyber security, prompting the development of this highly interactive and educational session.

The activity

Fiona and Sam delivered a cyber escape room that challenged participants to solve digital puzzles, identify online risks and work together to complete cyber‑themed tasks. This engaging, hands‑on approach allowed residents and staff to explore cyber security in a fun and memorable way, making complex concepts feel more accessible.

During the session, participants:

  • Developed a better understanding of common online threats
  • Practised recognising suspicious links, scams and unsafe digital behaviours
  • Strengthened their confidence in staying safe online
  • Worked collaboratively to solve cyber clues under timed conditions

The escape room format encouraged teamwork, discussion and problem‑solving - all while reinforcing essential digital safety messages.

Supporting the engagement group’s goals

The engagement group, made up of enthusiastic residents who regularly contribute feedback and insight to the Tenant Voice and Engagement team, had highlighted cyber security as an area where they wanted to build their knowledge. This session directly responded to their interests, offering a practical and enjoyable way to learn skills that support everyday online safety.

Staff members who attended also benefited from the experience, gaining up‑to‑date cyber awareness they can share with colleagues and the wider community.

Impact

The collaboration between ROCU, Digital Wigan and the Tenant Voice and Engagement team delivered clear outcomes:

  • Increased cyber awareness among residents and staff
  • Improved confidence in recognising and avoiding online risks
  • Stronger relationships between the engagement group and service teams
  • A creative learning experience that made digital safety more approachable

Participants left the session feeling more informed, more confident and better equipped to protect themselves online.
