Dorothy: The resident who started it all

Dorothy: The resident who started it all

When people talk about technology, they often focus on devices and internet connections. But for Dorothy, it started with something much more important: a need to connect with others.

In 2020, during the Covid-19 pandemic, Dorothy got in touch with Wigan Council looking for support. Living alone and unable to see friends or family, she felt isolated and disconnected from the world around her. Like many people at the time, the restrictions had left her feeling cut off from everyday life. At that point, TechMates didn't exist.

There was no volunteer programme, no established model and no roadmap. Dorothy simply needed help. As conversations began, it became clear that if Dorothy was experiencing this level of isolation, there were likely many other residents facing similar challenges.

Determined to make a difference, a new approach was created around Dorothy's needs. She was matched with student volunteer Sam Boffey, who became the first ever TechMate volunteer, while Dorothy became the first ever TechMate learner. Together, they would help shape what would grow into one of Wigan's most recognised digital support programmes.

Through the newly created TechMates programme, Dorothy received a gifted iPad and regular one-to-one support. What started as help with the basics soon became a journey of learning, confidence and friendship.

Over time, Dorothy learned how to use email, browse the internet, access online services and shop online independently. As her confidence grew, so did the role that technology played in her everyday life. The iPad became a gateway to staying informed, keeping busy and maintaining connections with the world around her.

Six years later, Dorothy continues to thrive.

Today, she confidently uses technology as part of her daily routine and remains an active member of the TechMates community. The support she receives has evolved alongside her growing skills, helping her continue to explore new technology and build on what she has already achieved.

In 2026, Dorothy reached another exciting milestone when she purchased her very first smartphone, proving that there is no age limit on learning something new and that her digital journey is far from over.

What makes Dorothy's story even more special is that the student volunteer who first supported her now works for Digital Wigan, helping hundreds of other residents begin their own journeys with technology.

From one resident seeking support during a difficult period came an idea that would go on to support communities across the borough. Dorothy may have been TechMates' first learner, but she was also the inspiration behind its creation. Without Dorothy, TechMates might never have existed at all.

Today, her story stands as a reminder that sometimes the biggest projects begin with helping just one person.
