Digital Wigan team build artificial intelligence skills
Members of the Digital Wigan team recently took part in a Responsible AI (Artificial Intelligence) Train the Trainer workshop delivered by Manchester Metropolitan University in partnership with the Greater Manchester Combined Authority (GMCA), helping to strengthen their knowledge and understanding of artificial intelligence and its role in communities
The training brought together community-focused organisations from across Greater Manchester to explore how artificial intelligence can be used safely, ethically and responsibly. Sessions covered a range of topics, including responsible AI, data privacy, ethics, misinformation, deepfakes, prompt writing and the practical use of generative AI tools.
As a team that works directly with residents to improve digital confidence, the learning provided valuable insight into how AI is increasingly shaping the way people access information, services and support. The workshop encouraged participants to consider both the opportunities and challenges that AI presents, particularly for vulnerable and underrepresented communities.
The training also highlighted the importance of building trust in AI, ensuring people understand how these technologies work and are given the knowledge they need to use them safely. Through interactive discussions and hands-on exercises, the Digital Wigan team explored ways AI can support community engagement, content creation, data analysis and service delivery while maintaining a strong focus on privacy and transparency.
A key theme throughout the day was ensuring that communities are involved in conversations about emerging technologies. The workshop showcased examples of community engagement projects designed to give residents a voice in how AI is developed and used, reinforcing the importance of putting people at the centre of digital innovation.
