Creativity, confidence and digital skills on display at Turnpike Gallery

Visitors to Turnpike Gallery recently enjoyed an inspiring photography exhibition showcasing the creativity, talent and digital skills of learners from More Than Words, one of the organisations that forms part of Wigan Borough's Digital Communities Partnership. 

The exhibition celebrated a unique project that brought together photography, digital technology and community collaboration, giving learners the opportunity to explore their creativity while developing confidence in using digital devices. 

For some time, More Than Words had wanted to run a photography project but lacked access to the technology needed to make it happen. Through the Digital Communities Partnership, Digital Wigan was able to support the project by loaning iPads, enabling learners to capture and create their own photographic work. 

This support helped turn an idea into reality. 

"Being part of the partnership means that we have access to a lot of information, support and guidance, and often technical equipment if we need it" explained Stacey, More than Words’ Partnerships Manager. "For this project, that support was invaluable." 

Armed with iPads, learners spent time exploring their surroundings, experimenting with photography and capturing images that reflected their own unique perspectives. Along the way they developed new digital skills, discovered creative techniques and gained confidence in using technology independently. 

The project culminated in a public exhibition at Turnpike Gallery, where participants had the opportunity to see their work professionally displayed for friends, family and visitors. 

The pride and excitement of the learners was evident throughout the exhibition. 

One participant shared how they had used different camera features on the iPad to create their favourite image, while others enthusiastically talked about the photographs they had chosen to exhibit and the stories behind them. 

For many, seeing their work displayed in a gallery setting was a memorable experience that celebrated both their creativity and their achievements. 

The exhibition also demonstrated that digital engagement is about much more than access to devices. It is about creating opportunities, removing barriers and enabling people to use technology in ways that enhance confidence, creativity and connection. 

Those involved reflected on the long-standing relationship between More Than Words and Digital Wigan, highlighting how partnership working continues to create opportunities that benefit local people and communities. 

This project stands as a powerful example of what can be achieved when organisations come together with a shared goal: providing residents with the tools, support and opportunities they need to thrive in an increasingly digital world.
