Self-assessment guidance

Before you begin your self-assessment form, we've put together the following guidance to talk you through each section of the form that requires you to collate information about your business so you can be prepared.

Section 1 - Your business

This section includes general Information about your business, including business name and email address.

You will also need to provide:

  • Number of people employed by your business in the Wigan Borough. Only provide details of those employed in Wigan Borough if you have locations outside of Wigan
  • How many of those employed in your Wigan Borough locations are Wigan Residents.

Section 2 - Business resilience

You will need to confirm:

  • How long your business has been trading for
  • If you have a website, your website address and whether you can purchase goods / services through your website
  • If you are up to date with your business rates.

Section 3 - Employment and training

You will need to confirm:

  • If your business pays above National Minimum Wage to at least 50% of all your employees
  • If your business pays Real Living Wage to at least 50% of all your employees
  • If your business offers work experience for people within priority groups. This could include a person:
    • with a disability
    • long-term health conditions,
    • who is NEET (Not in Education, Employment or Training),
    • in care
  • Number of staff employed with a disability or long-term health condition.
      • Additional needs are wide ranging and can vary hugely from small, simple measures through to more complex needs that may require reasonable workplace adjustments. The six main categories of additional needs include, but are not limited to, individuals with autism, physical disabilities, learning difficulties, mental health, social needs and sensory impairments. Each individual and their circumstances are unique and should be treated as such.
  • Number of apprentices your business currently employs and the details of the apprenticeship(s), title e.g. Customer Service, Business Admin, and level, e.g. Level 2
  • Number of apprentices your business has employed at the end of their apprenticeships in the last 3 years
  • If you currently providing 'on-the-job' experience for a student taking a T-Level course (external link) and if so, provide the details of the T-Level being undertaken
  • If your business supports unpaid carers in the workplace and how you support them.

Section 4 - Local community

Where applicable, you will need to provide:

  • Name of a local community group that your business supports, details of the support and whether this was through our Deal for Communities team
  • Name of a local community group that your business financially supports
  • Confirmation of whether your business provides staff volunteering for local projects
  • Details of the support your business provides to another local business sector organisation
  • Details of how your business supports a community group or organisation. This could be through contributing time, donating goods, providing advice etc.
  • Details of support you receive from another business and name of the business. This may be as a mentor.

Section 5 - Supporting local

This section will ask you to confirm the number of suppliers both based in Wigan and based outside Wigan in the following categories:

  • 1-3 suppliers
  • 4-6 suppliers
  • 7+ suppliers.

Section 6 - Schools

Where applicable, you will need to confirm:

  • Name of Wigan Borough schools that your business supports, this could be as a Governor, fundraising, providing equipment etc.
  • If your business provides work experience opportunities or supports a Wigan Borough schools careers fair for high school children.

Section 7 - Environmental sustainability / green economy

Where applicable, you will need to confirm:

  • If your business has low energy lighting and / or solar panels installed
  • If your businesses energy is provided on a green tariff
  • How your place of business is heated
  • If you use an Environmental Management System such as ISO14001
  • If you calculate your annual greenhouse gas emissions from your business
  • If your business uses a recycling service beside your general waste collections
  • If you are actively working towards reducing plastic/non recyclable materials in your business
  • Number of commercial vehicles you have and if applicable, the number of vehicles which are hybrid or electric
  • If you have a Bike to Work Scheme
  • If your business has a car share / public transport incentive
  • Brief details of eco-friendly products your business uses in the workplace, e.g. recycled paper, eco toilet paper, biodegradable plastic / packaging, environmentally friendly cleaning products etc.

Section 8 - Business support

This section asks if your business has received business support from Wigan Council or the Business Growth Hub (external link) over the last 3 years, including Wigan Council’s Workplace Health Team.

Section 9 - Deal for Business / Business Consortium

This section asks you to confirm if your business has recommended the Deal for Business to another business and if you are an active member of the Business Consortium.
