    Wigan Council leader Lord Peter Smith has this week been meeting some of Leigh’s top fundraisers on the aisles of the Asda superstore. Manager Mark Hill told Cllr Smith: “We’re proud to support causes like Tickled Pink, Children in Need and the local hospice.” His staff are encouraged to do their bit and Mark has climbed Snowdon to raise funds and colleagues bake special cakes to sell in support of various charities.

    The borough’s very best traders are in town. Around thirty local businesses, all of which are members of the council’s Good Traders Scheme, gathered this week for a ceremony to celebrate excellence in customer service led by senior councillors.

    The retired chartered engineer was an apprentice at Wigan’s internationally renowned mining college from 1952 and left with an HNC and a long career as a designer. This week the 72 year old was one of a group of students of a very different kind who returned to the same building for a guided tour.

    Wigan Council is proposing to increase the admission number of Tyldesley Primary School from 30 to 45 on a permanent basis from September 2011, as part of the Wigan Schools for the Future programme.

  • New money to tackle anti social behaviour and support families (27/01/2010)

    Wigan Council and its partners have been awarded national funding for a pioneering project to support families who want to get to grips with their anti social behaviour and avoid losing their home. The council, Wigan and Leigh Housing and the leading children’s charity Action for Children submitted an ambitious bid to tackle disruptive behaviour and provide intensive ‘family support’ to those who are prepared to turn their lives around.

  • Big Hearts of the Community (27/01/2010)

    Big hearts, big ideas and great success. That’s the group ‘Compassion in Action’, who offer everything from friendly advice to NVQ courses, home furniture packages to cookery demonstrations. Their Lowton outreach centre has only been open a few months, but has already seen visits from the Mayor of Wigan, bosses from Wigan & Leigh Housing and prominent members of the local Rotary Club and churches.
