Consultation on regenerating Wigan Archives & Leigh Local Studies

Leigh Town Hall 1908We are in the process of forming exciting plans for developing the Archives & Local Studies in Leigh town centre.

The Archives searchroom on the second floor of Leigh Town Hall is a space that poses access issues to many and is not as visible as we feel the service should be. The space is becoming increasingly unsuitable for the growing numbers of researchers and volunteers using the Archives.

We need to ensure that the Archives & Local Studies are able to continue to accept collections of records and for these to be stored in carefully controlled and specialised environmental conditions.

We hope that our proposals for the Archives & Local Studies will offer an exciting, innovative and cost effective solution for the service and for the Borough. We hope to relocate the public searchroom for the Archives and Leigh Local Studies to the ground floor of Leigh Town Hall, and in addition to this to create a new Archive & Museum exhibition space on the ground floor in the vacant shop units on Market Street, Leigh.

The basements of the vacant shop units will be converted to new archival storage strongrooms, and existing strongrooms refurbished.

We will need to apply to the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) to enable us to achieve these ambitions for the service. Speaking to as many people with an interest or involvement in the Archives, and taking on board feedback, is part of this process.
