Jubilee Honour's Letter from Alison McKenzie-Folan

Jubilee Honour's Letter from Alison McKenzie-Folan

Dear Partner

I hope you all had a very enjoyable Jubilee Weekend on what was a very special occasion for the nation.

We are absolutely delighted that during this unique year several Wigan Borough residents, community organisations and businesses received Queen’s Honours and awards for their exceptional achievements.

Our local honours recipients were:

  • Sean O’Loughlin – OBE for services to Rugby League Football
  • Councillor David Molyneux – MBE for services to Local Government and the Community in Wigan
  • Professor Srimathi Rajagopalan Murali – MBE for services to International Doctors working in the NHS
  • Dorothy Margaret Bowker – BEM for services to Disadvantaged People in Leigh
  • Stewart Parsons – BEM for services to Music and Libraries

The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service was awarded to:

  • Lancashire Mining Museum in Astley
  • Talking About My Generation in Leigh
  • The Pelican Centre in Tyldesley
  • Think Ahead Stroke in Ince

The Queen’s Award for Enterprise was awarded to:

  • Idem Safety Switches in Hindley Green

It is wonderful to see our citizens, voluntary and community organisations and businesses recognised in this way.

Yet it is still the case that Greater Manchester, including Wigan Borough, receives far fewer honours than it should. To address this we simply need more people to nominate deserving individuals so that the outstanding achievements of people in our borough are recognised. Anyone can make a nomination.

To help support this the Cabinet Office is running a virtual Honours Festival from 14th to 17th June. All events are free and anyone who has an interest in honours and making a nomination for someone deserving can attend.

View full details for the events and registration (external link).

If you are unable to attend these events, then please take a look at the honours webpage (external link) which details how to nominate someone for an honour.

It would be wonderful in the years ahead to see many more people from all sectors and backgrounds in Wigan Borough recognised for their outstanding contributions to our place and its people.

If you have any questions or would like support from the council with submitting a nomination please email Simon Haworth on S.Haworth@wigan.gov.uk.

Yours sincerely

Alison Mckenzie-Folan, Chief Executive
