Acclaimed Ancient Egypt expert to deliver two talks at museum
An acclaimed Egyptologist and TV presenter will deliver two talks at the Museum of Wigan Life on Saturday, August 6.
Professor Joann Fletcher, who is based in the archaeology department at the University of York and is lead ambassador for the Egypt Exploration Society, will deliver two talks as part of a summer-long celebration of all things Ancient Egypt at the museum.
The first is a family-friendly talk suitable for adults and children aged 11 plus, and will focus on the sport of ancient Egypt.
Jo will explore the wide range of sports ancient Egyptians took part in throughout their 3,000-year history – which ranges from chariot racing and ball games to running and swimming.
Councillor Chris Ready, portfolio holder for communities, said: “We are thrilled to have Professor Fletcher delivering talks and delving into such fascinating topics here at the Museum of Wigan Life.
“We’re incredibly proud of our delivery of cultural activities here at Wigan Council, in line with our cultural manifesto, the Fire Within.
“With the summer holidays just beginning, it’s the perfect timing to bring the children along – you might all learn something new!”
The second talk will explore the ‘Golden Faces of Tutankhamen’s dynasty’ – which holds a special significance as it takes place in the centenary year of the discovery of Tutankhamen’s tomb.
The talk will focus on some of ancient Egypt's best known golden masks, including that of Tutankhamen and Wigan’s own golden lady that sits proudly on display in the museum.
Professor Joann Fletcher, who has been archaeology advisor to the Museum of Wigan Life for almost a decade, added: “It is always such a pleasure coming back to Wigan to do these talks, to revisit old friends and of course the superb artefacts in the museum".
The talks will take place on Saturday, August 6 and booking is essential.
The first talk (suitable for ages 11+), ‘The Sport of Ancient Egypt’ begins at 1.30pm and costs £5.
