An open letter to Olympic and Paralympic athletes

Dan, Ella, Emily, Gregg, Harry and Keely

May we start by congratulating you on being selected to represent Great Britain at Tokyo 2021.

The Olympic and Paralympic Games are the pinnacle of sporting achievement, the dream of so many but a reality for so few and you have made it! You already inspire so many children and young people across the borough and now you will go on to show the world just what Wigan has to offer!

In any circumstance your passion, hard work, and sacrifice for your sport would be an inspiration and your achievements spectacular but following a period of adversity and such uncertainty for all, your determination has never dwindled, and this has made your achievements all that more special.

You have already made your community and Wigan proud and each and every one of us will be believing in you, cheering you on during the games and when you return.

Be proud of yourself, of where you are, and what you have achieved and most of all, enjoy it.

Congratulations once again.

Yours sincerely,

Cllr Yvonne Klieve, Mayor, Wigan Borough

Cllr David T. Molyneux, Leader, Wigan Council

Alison McKenzie-Folan, Chief Executive, Wigan Council
