Consultant appointed for Scholes Village High Rise improvements
A transformational project for residents in Scholes has moved a step closer with the appointment of Cundall Johnston & Partners.
Wigan Council has appointed the consultant to support the delivery of improvement works to seven high rise blocks in Scholes Village, close to Wigan Town Centre.
Investment will see the replacement of all 14 passenger lifts with residents benefitting from improved access on every floor.
Other enhancements will see upgraded fire activation and alarm equipment, water main replacement in communal service ducts, installation of more LED lighting and any required communal decoration.
Councillor Terry Halliwell, Wigan Council’s cabinet member for housing and welfare, said: “This extensive programme of work supports the council’s commitment to home upgrades and improving accessibility for residents in high rise flats.
“On completion, residents will have an improved lift service, bright and welcoming communal areas, and improved fire safety arrangements that meet regulations which should ensure residents feel safer in their homes.
“The appointment of Cundall Johnston & Partners marks a big step in the long-term project and the council looks forward to working in partnership through to completion.”
Essentially the consultant will be responsible for securing other relevant specialists for design through to completion of the project, including undertaking a full project management role.
As part of the contract Cundall has committed to a number of Community Wealth Building initiatives which includes two work placements at their Manchester based office, career talks at local schools and colleges and volunteering time to support the development and maintenance of greenspace projects.
Graham Barker, director of vertical transportation at Cundall, said: "The team are really pleased to be involved in this project and supporting Wigan Council and its residents in providing substantiate improvements to the lifts and shared area of Scholes Village."
From start to completion, the scheme is expected to take approximately two years with the works delivered in a phased approach to minimise disruption as much as possible.
A comprehensive plan to support residents through the change will be developed to ensure all concerns are fully understood and any necessary support can be put in place.
The council has already written to every resident about opportunities to be involved in the project.
