Wigan Boxing Day Cone Dance

A 42-year tradition that sees Wigan town centre overrun with life-sized cones, American footballers and superheroes will go ahead virtually this year.

Wigan town centre is renowned for its annual Boxing Day event and thanks to a partnership between Wigan Council and United We Stream GM, a six-hour party with acclaimed Wigan DJ’s will be streamed online for people to enjoy.

A spectacular film, poignantly called ‘42’, has been created by artist filmmakers and The Fire Within curators, AL and AL, in collaboration with dance choreographer Amy Burdon of WigLe Dance and artist Anna FC Smith.

The party will begin on 26th December at 6pm and will feature performances from acclaimed Wigan DJ’s including; MC Finchy, DJ Jake Slater, DJ Kenty, DJ Caino, DJ Kyle H, DJ Harvey, DJ Jake Slater and DJ Danny Mac.

AL and AL said: “Wigan Boxing Day Fancy Dress is created by the people for the people, it’s one of the most exciting nights and important cultural traditions in the annual calendar of our Borough. We are buzzing that this year we can keep that tradition going by inviting everyone to share their fancy dress bubble house-parties and stream the fun online together.”

#WiganBoxingDayFancyDress is part of United We Stream GM’s Christmas event programme, which also includes virtual productions on 18th and 19th December and a 24-hour Hacienda House Party on New Year’s Eve.

The leader of Wigan Council, Councillor David Molyneux said: “We have all had to make changes to our lives this year and Boxing Day will be no different.

“As this challenging year draws to a close, it’s important to think differently so this uplifting tradition continues to thrive. We’re delighted to be working with United We Stream, who will help us to harness the annual enthusiasm, creativity and excitement that people across the country bring to Wigan on Boxing Day.”
