Webcasting service available for mourners with attendance restrictions still in place

Family and friends who are unable to attend funerals of loved ones are being reminded they can take advantage of the council’s webcasting service.

With funeral attendance numbers restricted under government guidelines to help reduce the risk of spreading coronavirus, Wigan Council wants to ensure people can still pay their respects in a dignified way.

Staff have calculated that with social distancing in the chapel, a maximum of 20 people can attend inside with a further 10 people allowed within the grounds (30 people in total)

A high-quality live webcast, viewed via our secure and easy-to-use website is a very low cost option for families and friends to share in the service, with a recording of the webcast on a DVD, Blu-ray, or USB available as an option.

Webcasting allows up to 100 individual logins with the service secured through the need of a password for anyone wanting to join.

There has been a significant rise in webcasting since the start of the pandemic and the council wants to remind residents who would invite large parties or for those living far away.

Councillor Paul Prescott, cabinet member for environment said: “We appreciate this a very sensitive time for family members who have sadly lost someone they love but with social distancing measures in place, it’s vital that we continue to keep numbers down in the chapel and at grave side.

“That is why we have improved our offer with an easy-to-use and high-quality webcasting service for funerals, ensuring that family and friends who aren’t able to attend in person can pay their respects in a dignified way.”

Staff are working hard to make sure services go ahead in a safe environment with extra time reserved between services to ensure any area that could potentially come in contact with a person is disinfected.
