Sow the seeds to make your garden a bloomin' good one

To celebrate the efforts of residents who are spending lockdown sprucing up their greenspaces, Wigan Council has launched Bloomin’ Beautiful – an online gardening competition.

Residents don’t need a garden to take part, a hanging basket or window box can be entered into the online competition which will allow winners to receive a £50 gift voucher.

Chris Ready, Wigan Council’s cabinet member for communities at Wigan Council, said: “With the cancellation of In Bloom, we wanted to do something that would recognise and reward the efforts of our residents who are helping to make our town blooming beautiful.”

While the council is encouraging residents to be kind and stay at home, a useful list of businesses who can deliver plants direct to people’s doorsteps has been compiled.

It doesn’t matter how big or small your garden, if you are using hanging baskets or a window flower pot – all entries will be accepted.

The categories that people can enter are:

  • Junior garden (open to those aged 15 and under)
  • Container garden (includes hanging baskets, house plant displays, front step/ patio planters, and window/balcony boxes)
  • Edible garden
  • Most beautiful place
  • Most creative garden.

To enter the competition, residents must send a photograph of their entry and a few words about why they love their greenspace to ourtown@wigan.gov.uk along with their name, address and age before 31st May. See further details on the Our Town's Bloomin Marvellous page.

There will be a prize of a gardening book and £50 of gardening vouchers for a local garden centre for the winner in each category.

A shortlist of three in each category will be chosen by our Borough in Bloom committee and the final winners will be chosen by a public online vote via Wigan Council’s Facebook page.

Garden waste can be disposed of in resident’s green bins, or can be turned into compost. Find out further details about garden waste.
