No more scrum-bling for space for sports group
Sport Rebooted with Jenny Meadows in their free space at Guardian Goalposts
A community initiative to collect sports equipment for children has been backed by Olympian, Jenny Meadows and a local health and safety company.
Mark Glover and Andy Gore set up ‘Sport Rebooted’ in February to support those who are unable to afford new sporting equipment.
After using their personal garages to store more 1,000 items, Sport Rebooted was recently offered free storage space by Guardian Goalposts in Ince in line with Wigan Council’s Deal for Business.
Olympian and Wigan Borough resident, Jenny Meadows, has given her approval of the scheme, calling it a ‘simple yet valuable concept’.
Andy, who also coaches a football team said: “There are some really good community groups that collect clothing and essential items for underprivileged families and children, but Mark and I noticed that there isn’t much around dedicated to sport.
“We can’t believe the demand. It’s proven to be really popular, so our stock has grown considerably thanks to local people making donations.
We’re really thankful to Guardians Goalposts for the free space – it will allow us to increase our stock of items and help even more families and adults in need.”
Sport Rebooted has supported 50 of the borough’s residents, including three veterans, over the last nine months by collecting boots, shin pads and other training gear.
Neil Ormesher of Guardian Goalposts said: “What Mark and Andy are doing is fantastic and it makes sense - we have the space and jumped at the chance to help.
“We’d signed up to The Deal and saw this as our way to give something back to the community. Hopefully our small part will make a big difference to more young people.”
After hearing about the initiative, Jenny paid Mark and Andy a visit in their new premises. She said: “I love the Sport Rebooted model, in particular the simple yet valuable concept. Throughout my career I have seen how supportive the people in the Wigan Borough can be.
"It is thanks to this strong community spirit that Sport Rebooted is thriving and making such a positive difference to those in need of their support.”
Wigan Council launched the Deal for Business in 2017 in a bid to encourage more local businesses to get involved in the community.
Leader of Wigan Council, Councillor David Molyneux said: “Encouraging businesses to work with the community and voluntary sector is key to building and maintaining a strong borough that we can be even more proud of.
“Through The Deal we can help to create those relationships while supporting the local economy to thrive.
“It’s fantastic that Guardian Goalposts has acknowledged the importance of Mark and Andy’s passion. The space they have offered Sports Rebooted will allow them to support more young people much sooner than they originally anticipated.”
Councillor Chris Ready, cabinet member for communities also visited Mark and Andy’s new premises with Jenny and described their venture as ‘transformational’.
