Letter to the Mayor of Toronto
The following letter has been sent from the Leader of Wigan Council, Councillor David Molyneux, to the Mayor of Toronto, John Tory, following the promotion of Toronto Wolfpack to Super League.
I would like to pass on my congratulations following the promotion of Toronto Wolfpack to Super League on behalf of everyone here at Wigan Council. I do this on a personal level, first and foremost, as I know you have a close connection to the club and will have been as thrilled as each member of the fanbase. I also do so on an official basis as this will no doubt prove to be a boost for your city.
The rise of the Toronto Wolfpack has been closely followed in rugby league circles and I am sure the victory over Featherstone Rovers is the culmination of years of hard work. I watched the Million Pound Game and was thrilled to see the passion of the fans inside the Lamport Stadium. Having the Wolfpack in Super League will open many exciting opportunities for the sport and no doubt yourself and officials at the club will be counting down the days until the new season starts.
We are very proud of our rugby league heritage here in Wigan Borough and it is fantastic that the game is spreading to new parts of the world. The fans of Wigan Warriors are famous for following their club in great numbers wherever they play. This applies both in the traditional UK-based heartlands of the game and further afield in the southern hemisphere. The club is privileged to have such a dedicated contingent of travelling support. I can assure you there will be a significant band of travelling support already planning their journey over to Canada for an exciting stay in your city for the Wolfpack’s home fixture.
It goes without saying that yourself and anyone associated with the club will attract a warm welcome in our borough next season. I note the Super League fixtures have been announced this week and the Wolfpack are scheduled to play Wigan Warriors at the DW Stadium on February 13th. We at Wigan Council would therefore like to extend an invitation to yourself and colleagues to visit us should you decide to travel to the UK to coincide with the Wolfpack’s fixtures. It would be fantastic to see you, to discuss our shared love of rugby league and celebrate potential future links being established between our two areas in the coming years.
