A big thank you to all our volunteers
Volunteering groups and individuals are being recognised throughout the week for their continued hard work to improve the borough.
Two volunteering thank you days have been organised in Pennington Hall Park and Mesnes Park to appreciate dedicated volunteers across the borough for all their efforts, while also showcasing the many ways others can get involved.
There are numerous projects and areas of the borough that have been improved substantially thanks to the efforts of hard-working volunteers.
Last August, the transformation of a Bickershaw field was completed after council staff joined residents in getting their hands dirty and spruced up the area into a welcoming community garden on just one volunteer day.
Years of neglect had resulted in overgrown shrubbery and trees and pathways had become uneven meaning residents were unable to make use of the green space.
Councillor Chris Ready, cabinet member for communities at Wigan Council said: “Through The Deal, we’re committed to working with residents in a different way so that we can build a stronger borough.
“Volunteering is one mechanism in which we can build stronger partnerships and improve areas of the borough. I am grateful to all those that do volunteer for the good of the borough and I am excited to meet all the inspirational men and women who keep these fantastic voluntary groups ticking along all year.
“The hard work and spirit they demonstrate on a daily basis within their local communities is not forgotten by the council and thank you days are just a little token of our appreciation.
“Volunteering is an incredibly rewarding experience and we ask all those who are willing but maybe unsure on how they can get involved to come along and speak to people who are part of something already.”
Residents can enjoy refreshments and entertainment at Tuesday’s event in Pennington Hall Park between 3-5pm, while the event in Mesnes Park will be kicking off at the same time on Thursday.
