Recent events in Wigan town centre have led to an increase in footfall.

Wigan Council teamed up with local companies Nwcc Events and Haigh Foodie Friday to deliver the highly successful Guardians of the Galleries Vol 2 and Food Fest on the Square, which is due to continue throughout the summer.

On Saturday 13th April, Star Wars: Return of the Jedi actor, Willie Coppen, made an appearance at the town centre’s second Comic Con event, which led to The Galleries experiencing a footfall increase of almost 6,500 people.

The following week, visitors were treated to street food, drink and musical entertainment in Market Square with the return of Food Fest on the Square – another event that saw a footfall increase of 10 per cent in comparison to the same Saturday the previous year.

Becca Heron, director of economy and skills at Wigan Council said: “We know that people enjoy coming to the town centre and it has now become much more of a social space than in previous years.

“Habits are changing, so we’re looking at all the ways that we can capitalise on this and diversify our offer to match what people want.

“Working with The Galleries to hold events demonstrates our commitment to breathing new life into the shopping centre and is just the beginning of what could be possible in the future.

“We also believe that our decision to extend the free parking offer until March 2020 has contributed to the increase in footfall.

“And, now the works at Market Place have come to a close, we have a much more inviting area in the heart of the town centre that has been designed specifically to accommodate more events and social activity. We look forward to utilising this space to its full potential in the future.”

Food Fest on the Square will continue until October and will take place on the third Saturday of every month.

There will also be a range of other events taking place in The Galleries and the town centre over the coming months including Armed Forces Day, #TheFireWithin Festival and Wigan Pride.

The Galleries is also hosting a number of free activities for children every Saturday throughout the year.

Simon Tucker, centre manager at The Galleries said: “ We have committed to undertaking a varied and engaging programme of events throughout the year to provide our customers with additional experiences and activities.

“There’s no doubt that retail habits have shifted which is why we are adapting our offering. The Galleries is incredibly well placed in the town centre to host events and activities which has been evidenced by the popularity of recent events.”
