Food and drink festival held right the way through summer

What was supposed to be a one-off food festival in Wigan town centre has been extended to take place throughout the summer, thanks to popular demand.
Following the success of last year’s Food Fest on the Square event held in The Galleries shopping centre in Wigan town centre, Wigan Council has teamed up with Haigh Foodie Friday again to deliver the drink and street food market once a month until October.
The first event will take place on Saturday 20th April in The Galleries and the following events will take place on the third Saturday of each month until Saturday 19th October.
Visitors to Food Fest on the Square will be greeted with food traders serving dishes from around the world including wood-fired pizza, Mumbai street food, halloumi, hot dogs, Dutch waffles, cheesecakes and more.
Two Left Feet Tap from Haigh Woodland Park will again have two bars on site serving real ales and lagers. And, for those who prefer bubbles, Copa Fizz will be back with a range of gin and prosecco.
Promising to bring vibrancy and footfall, the Food Fest on the Square events also link with the local authority’s plan to develop a new offer for the town centre.
Becca Heron, director of economy and skills at Wigan Council said: “Last year’s Food Fest on the Square was a fantastic success and is proof that people enjoy coming into town centres for social reasons. Shopping habits are changing, and at Wigan we are actively trying to diversify our offer to match what people want.
“There was a lot of positive feedback following the event last year, so we are very glad to be working with The Galleries and Haigh Foodie Friday to extend this offer across the summer months.
“Holding events like this in The Galleries also demonstrates our commitment to being innovative and reimagining how these empty spaces can be used.
“We will continue to look at a range of options in order to breathe new life into the shopping centre and this just the beginning of what could be possible in the future.
“We look forward to the series of Food Fest on the Square events and we have no doubt that it will be very well attended.”
Held between 12pm and 8pm in the outdoor market space of The Galleries, the festival will also offer live musical entertainment.
Gabrielle Richardson, organiser of Haigh Foodie Friday said: “We are hugely excited to bring street food into The Galleries again. We believe it’s going to be a massive hit this summer, especially given the extended trading hours on the Saturday, from noon, and hope it will act as a draw to get people into town to enjoy all Wigan town centre has to offer!”
Simon Tucker, centre manager of The Galleries said: “We’re committed to using the space at The Galleries creatively. People appreciate different experiences when they come to the town centre which is why we created our Saturday Takeover concept, delivering a different event every weekend.
“Food markets are always popular and we’ve no doubt the success of last year’s event will be repeated over the summer.”
Food Fest on the Square follows an event-packed spring, including the Run Wigan Festival and pending Comic Con.
