Welcome to Borough Life Plus

As usual, our winter 2020 edition of Borough Life is packed full of fascinating stories, eye-catching images and handy tips.

So much so, in fact, that we wanted to offer you even more (it is the season of sharing gifts, after all).

Here, on the Borough Life Plus page, you can enjoy even more features in addition to the magazine, so sit back, relax, scroll down and take it all in.

For this edition we had a particular focus on our Support Local campaign and you can learn all about what our brilliant collection of local businesses have got to offer below.

There’s also exciting updates on the Rugby League World Cup 2021, a new exhibition at the Fire Within plus recaps of our first virtual health festival – Wellfest – and the borough’s efforts to recognise Black History Month.

Along a similar theme to Support and Shop Local, you will see a useful explainer on Community Wealth Building and what you can do to help.

And to top it all off, there’s a bunch of crafts, recipes and ideas to help you get into the festive spirit and lookahead to 2021.

We hope you enjoy it all and remember to Be Kind to yourself and others.

Support local shops

It’s Everyone’s Business

Support Local

Small businesses are at the heart of our communities and we all have a responsibility to help them thrive.

Now, more than ever, they need our support and so Wigan Council is calling on everyone to spend, support and shop local over this festive season and beyond.

As part of this campaign, we’ve spoken to a handful of the business owners who represent their community.

Watch our new video (external link) which showcases a selection of the amazing businesses we have across the borough.

Remember: Shop so they don’t drop!

Rugby League World Cup

Rugby League World Cup

Countdown to kick-off

The start of the Rugby League World Cup is less than a year away now but clubs across the borough are already benefitting.

Leigh Sports Village is one of the host venues for the tournament and as part of the package amateur clubs are being supported by national legacy funding.

One of those clubs is Shevington Sharks and you can watch their video on Twitter (external link).

In addition to having three fixtures at the LSV, Leigh is hosting the Lebanon team for the tournament.

To help introduce them to our borough, we enlisted RL legends Sean O’Loughlin and Mickey Higham to teach them a thing or two about the Leigh/Wigan rivalry - watch the video (external link).

With bragging rights up for grabs, it didn’t take long before their competitive natures took over!

 The Fire Within exhibition

The Fire Within new exhibition

Digital Wigan 2020

Now in its second year, the borough’s cultural manifesto - The Fire Within - continues to break new ground and knock down barriers.

A new installation, We Will Always Be Together xx, focuses on the power of digital and how we all embrace technology in the modern world.

It’s all free in the Galleries in the heart of Wigan town centre so we urge you to take a visit. But in-keeping with the theme for this year, here’s a digital tour so you know what you’ve got to look forward to.

Black History

Dig deeper, look closer, think bigger

Throughout October borough residents shared their fascinating life experiences as part of Black History Month.

Working alongside community group Everything Human Rights, the council launched an online programme to help highlight the issues raised as part of the global initiative.

For insights, information and even some recipes for culinary delights from across the globe, visit our section about Black History.

For ‘elf and safety reasons Christmas might be a bit different this year but that doesn’t mean there will be a lack of festive fun.

Create a festive garland

We also have a selection box of festive crafts to keep all the family occupied in-between the mince pies and turkey!

  1. Gather your materials. You will need a pencil/pen, scissors, glue stick, card or recycled Christmas cards, string and the template
  2. Cut out your template shapes (see steps 1 and 2)
  3. Draw around your templates onto your card. Cut them out.
  4. Fold all your shapes in half (see steps 3 and 4)
  5. Use the glue stick to apply glue to the back of each of your shapes and stick the backs to each other. Before you glue the last pieces go to the next step.
  6. Get your string. Place the string along one of the folds before glueing your shapes together (see steps 5 and 6)
  7. Knot the string above and below the shape to keep it in place (see step 7)

Community Wealth Building

The road to a borough economy that works for everyone

Our borough has drawn on its community values like never before this year.

It has seen everyone rally around one another to support the most vulnerable, protect the NHS and help out with a sense of neighbourly spirit.

Before the pandemic, Community Wealth Building was going to play a key role in our Deal 2030 plans.

It’s a way of shaping things that plays to our strengths; like the borough’s community spirit and the ways of working that have been successful through The Deal.

Now, the importance of Community Wealth Building has grown as we collectively work towards our recovery in a post Covid-19 world.

View more information about what it’s all about including a video to watch.
