Low Bank Ground is now part of Be Well Outdoors - the new outdoor adventure arm of Wigan Council’s Be Well leisure and wellbeing movement.

Our mission is to stimulate, challenge and inspire, and to connect more and more people to the beauty of nature and the physical and mental benefits of getting active... outdoors.

We offer a range of exhilarating and memorable outdoors experiences as part of bespoke educational residentials for schools and corporate team-building packages.

About Low Bank Ground

Low Bank Ground is an outdoor activity centre that sits on the beautiful shores of Coniston Water, in the heart of the Lake District National Park.

With spectacular natural environment at our disposal, our team of qualified and experienced instructors have been providing high quality outdoor adventure courses for over 25 years.

Who can book?

We cater to schools, colleges and youth groups, as well as independent groups and families. Our full offer includes:

  • Tailored residential stays for schools, colleges, and youth groups - we have a fantastic track record in providing safe outdoor education for young people. By using real life settings, young people can develop knowledge and understanding in both a stimulating and challenging environment, and build their independence
  • Private hire for independent groups on a catered or self-catered basis e.g. sports clubs, corporate team-building, large family gatherings, birthdays etc.
  • Training and activity courses for adults and family groups.

Our activities

We offer a range of land and water-based activities, coaching and courses for people of all abilities delivered by our fully qualified and friendly instructors. Some of our activities / courses include:

  • Hill walking
  • Orienteering
  • Rock climbing and scrambling
  • Canoeing
  • Kayaking
  • Sailing
  • Raft building
  • Ghyll scrambling (climbing waterfalls and jumping into pools of water)
  • Paddle boarding
  • Axe throwing
  • Bushcraft and archery
  • Environmental / conservation activities
  • Problem solving activities.

For schools, colleges and youth groups - Evening activities are included, however if teachers prefer to spend the evening developing their relationship with the children, we offer a range of self-staffed activities.

Our facilities

Low Bank Ground is comprised of 4 main buildings. Two of the buildings, Highfield and Rough Close, provide self-contained accommodation, alongside a separate building that hosts the dining facilities for catered breaks. The 4th building is Yew Tree Lodge that provides additional changing facilities and informal indoor activity space for evening activities.

People with disabilities and other conditions

Our experienced team of instructors can design a programme of activity to meet the requirements of individuals and groups with complex needs. Small groups can be accommodated with accessible bedroom and bathroom facilities.

We offer a wide variety of equipment available to support a varied activity programme of water sports, climbing, archery, bushcraft and problem-solving activities.

How much is it?

Low Bank Ground can accommodate up to 50 people in two self-contained buildings - Highfield and Rough Close - which can also be hired separately.

Prices are competitive and offer great value for money.
