The
designs for the Market Cross were the result of workshops with six
local schools by the sculptor Sebastien Boyesen. It marks the spot
of the original market cross and celebrates the Royal Charter granted
by Henry III in 1246 which meant that Wigan could develop and prosper
as a market town. In the centre is a bronze cast of the old Wigan
town seal which shows Moot Hall. Look also at the railings on the
nearby Wetherspoon's pub. These were also designed by Sebastien Boyesen. |
