Borough Life Winter 2006: Your New Year challenge

It’s a startling fact that two-thirds of us are still not doing enough exercise to take care of our long-term health, despite having some of the best sports and leisure facilities in the region on our doorstep

Now Great Britain Rugby League legend Phil Clarke has teamed up with Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust (WLCT) and the council to encourage more people to get active in the new year.

“If ever there was a time for a wake up call, this is it,” said Phil. “For the first time in our history, the life expectancy of people living in the western world is decreasing, largely due to poor diets and a severe lack of exercise.

“Just a slight change to your lifestyle can make a huge difference to your health and well-being. I have family and friends in their 50s and 60s who have increased their activity by just a few hours a week and are amazed at how much better they feel.”

Phil’s comments come from a wealth of experience. Known to many as the face of Sky Sports Rugby League, he also sits on the regional board of Sport England and was recently appointed president of Wigan Borough Sports Council.

Phil is a director of locally based Healthworks, health and leisure specialists who are working with WLCT to deliver the Well @ Work programme at Heinz and Hindley Prison.

WLCT has spent £650,000 fitting out its five Profiles gyms with the latest equipment, ranging from top level cardio kit to the Easy Line circuit system, which is ideal for a steadier work out. Despite being packed with state-of-the-art equipment they are still the cheapest facilities available locally.

“The equipment at all five Profiles is second to none,” added Phil. “Whether you want a gym or just a stroll in the park, just pick up the phone or call in at your local sports centre. If you enjoy living your life, why not try and do something to live your life longer?”
