Borough Life Winter 2006: A big thank you for another ‘green’ year

The council’s recycling team wants to thank residents for another successful “green” year.

Over the last 12 months, 1,600 tonnes of glass, 8,000 tonnes of paper, 65 tonnes of cans, 650 tonnes of cardboard and almost 9,000 tonnes of green waste have been saved from going to landfill sites by people using the doorstep collection schemes and the local recycling sites.

In five years the amount of waste being recycled in our borough has jumped from just four per cent to almost 20 per cent. The council is currently investigating ways to extend the kerbside recycling collections to make it easier for more people to recycle their glass bottles, cans, and plastic.

Lisa Gregory from Golborne, winner of a council competition for eco-friendly residents, is typical of the passionate approach that many residents now have towards recycling.

Oak Avenue resident Lisa is really into the green lifestyle, bagging up all her waste into separate piles for glass, cans and plastics to take to her local recycling centre.

“I want my children to live in a clean, green world,” said Lisa. “We all have to do more and I’d like to see even more facilities for residents to recycle from home.”
