Borough Life Autum 2006: Newsround
- Normal service has resumed at the borough’s household waste recycling centre at Kirkless, Higher Ince. The Makerfield Way facility, shut after a fire last month, is open to residents following major work and a safety inspection. Kirkless is open daily from 8am – 8pm, accepting materials including plastic bottles, asbestos and garden waste.
- Tenants and residents associations in Marsh Green, Pemberton, Worsley Hall and Norley Hall have organised a gala day on Saturday 2nd September. It’s taking place at Pembec High School from 11am to 4pm and includes a bouncy castle, children’s entertainer, archery, rugby tournament, climbing frame and assault course plus live music.
- Local women are invited to Wigan Investment Centre, on Waterside Drive, on Wednesday 13 September for a ‘Women in Business’ open day. Advice on turning that good idea into a money-spinner will be available from experts in business and self-employment. More details from John Burns, 01942 208801.
- New council tenants who engage in anti-social behaviour or run up rent arrears will be put on probation for six months. All new tenants are on probation for a year – but anyone who fails to abide by the rules will get a further 6 months trial, say Wigan and Leigh Housing. If things have not improved by the end of their ‘extended’ introductory tenancy, they will be evicted.
- Edwardian Leigh Town Hall has had a £60,000 makeover including external maintenance and painting, and attention to the old council chamber, committee room and staircase. The former Leigh municipal borough HQ is now home to various council services, including the borough’s archives unit and adult services.
