Borough Life Autum 2006: Make the most of your free time!

We can work it out: Howe Bridge sports centre's gym is just one of the many leisure facilities offering free sessions on September 9th.

IT’S going to be a birthday bash to beat all others. In fact when Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust (WLCT) throws open the doors of its facilities to everyone in the borough it’s going to be priceless!

The Trust’s Getting Wigan Active campaign is two years old this September and to celebrate the organisation will be hosting a free family fun day. Getting Wigan Active has brought initiatives such as free swimming for the 16 and under and the over 60s in our borough. But now the campaign is going one step further…FREE EVERYTHING for one day only.

The event will take place on Saturday September 9 and aims to encourage people to try out the Trust’s huge variety of services.

So if you’re thinking about getting fit there will be free swimming for all and ‘wet and wild’ fun pool sessions, use of sauna and steam rooms will be free and entrance to all Profiles gyms will cost nothing.

There’ll be sports for all at Robin Park, Ashton, Hindley and Howe Bridge with taster sessions in everything from football to tennis. And if you want to try your hand at golf there will be free access to the nine-hole Himalyan putting green at Haigh.

But it’s not just about sport…culture vultures can enjoy the full range of what’s on offer at the borough’s libraries. Free ‘quick read’ books will be scattered across the Trust’s facilities on the day so keep your eyes peeled!

Mesnes Park will be hosting a mobile library, there will be bat walks at Wigan Flashes and even a Last Night of the Proms-style gala at Pennington Hall Park.

And, as an extra bonus as part of Heritage Open Day on Sunday September 10 the Way We Were museum at Wigan Pier will be open for free and Haigh Hall will be offering guided tours.

WLCT chief executive Rodney Hill, says: “This is a unique event. We don’t believe any organisation has offered its entire services to the public for free and we want everyone to make the most of them.

“The first two years of Getting Wigan Active has been an exciting time and we have seen some fantastic developments.

“We want to give something back to the public and give people the opportunity to try our services for maybe the first time”
