Borough Life Autum 2006: Flexible service helps parents apply for schools online

Three Cheers: Mayor Eunice Smethurst joins Woodfield Primary youngsters at the opening of their new state of the art school.

Parents whose children will be moving from primary to secondary school or starting primary school in September next year will soon be able to apply for a place online.

It’s all part of Wigan Council’s drive to make local services more flexible and accessible.

The online application service will be available during the usual time for making applications:

Just go to www.wigan.gov.uk and follow the links. You’ll get an e-mail confirmation that your application has been received.

The council believes the new system will be great news for parents. It’s quick and easy to use, and you can apply from home at any time, any day.

The system also helps you by checking for errors, there's no risk that the application will get lost – and you can even change your application right up to the closing date.

If you don’t have a computer at home, there’s free computer access at local libraries, and staff will be pleased to help.

Ged Rowney, director of children and young people’s services, says: “We hope as many parents as possible will take advantage of this new service because of the benefits to them.

“However anyone can still apply on the paper form instead if they prefer.”
