Borough Life Summer 2006: Wigan South

The township forum for Wigan South has a number of projects underway and feels strongly about a range of issues. Its main priority areas at the moment are road safety across the township and health services for Marsh Green in particular.

Local councillors, community groups and the forum have been working hard over the last year to develop a play area at Kipling Avenue, Worsley Mesnes. It is now completed and a fun day has been arranged on Friday 4th August.

Following on from last year's success, a Party in the Park will be held again this year at Alexandra Park, Newtown, organised by St Mark's church. The party will take place on Saturday 24th June, 1pm to 4pm.

Fed up with feeling like Marsh Green wasn't getting its fair share of resources, agency workers and the local community have come together to try to tackle some of the biggest problems in the area. The group calling itself Marsh Green Matters is meeting regularly to work out how to make things better.

Clifton St community centre, Worsley Mesnes, has started offering a luncheon club one Sunday a month for the over sixties, which has proved very popular.

Local councillors, Wigan Council's engineering services and the township forum have worked together to provide better crossing facilities along Montrose Avenue to help children arrive safely at school when the new Westfield school opens later this year.
