GIVING up time every week to volunteer for the council is an amazing commitment to take on. To show its appreciation, more than 400 of these special people have been rewarded for their hard work in special awards ceremonies called The Big Thankyou.
Each of the ten townships in Wigan borough held their own event between October 2005 and March 2006 for volunteers old and new and from all age groups and walks of life.
The events were jointly organised and funded by the council through the community engagement team and Wigan & Leigh Council for Voluntary Services (CVS).
A number of local councillors also attended and presented the awards.
A variety of entertainment also took place including a barbershop choir, performances by local dance groups and singers. Brownies, guides and scouts also took part in some areas.
More than 1,200 people attended the events to celebrate the significant achievement of all the recipients.
Local and borough-wide voluntary and community and statutory organisations also brought display stands to encourage others to volunteer and show the range of volunteering opportunities in the borough.
