Margaret Howarth’s moving poem will be displayed as part of improvements planned to Atherton’s war memorial and the surrounding area.
Her touching verse was written in response to a competition launched by the Atherton Cenotaph project team which asked for contributions from all budding poets. The poem Be Proud reads:
Our lads and lasses who went to war,
Died in deserts and fields of flowers,
Remember them all with gratitude,
Live the peace that is now ours.
Now the Cenotaph partnership, which includes local councillors, residents, ex-servicemen, schoolchildren and council staff, is gearing up to transform derelict land around the cenotaph into a new garden of peace and remembrance.
