Borough Life Summer 2006: Leigh

map of leigh

Environment is the key theme behind much of the work of the Leigh township forum. A ‘Cleaner and Greener Leigh’ campaign is being launched by them to cover the whole township.

The forum has being working with Wigan Council’s 'street scene' team, Greater Manchester Police Cadets and the British Trust for Conservation Volunteers (BTCV) to plant thousands of bulbs in and around the town.

A number of derelict buildings including the vandalised Bentwood Factory have been demolished and are being replaced with housing developments thanks to the hard work of the forum.

The forum has helped Leigh CE Infants School get a prestigious ‘Green Flag’ award from ENCAMS - the UK’s biggest environmental charity - for its outstanding contribution to the environment.

Blooming marvellous... bulbs planted by volunteers have helped brighten up the township.
