Atherton forum is very proud of its community and the efforts many local organisations are already making to improve the area. It’s particularly concerned with the environment, road safety and the local economy.
The forum has set its stall out to make sure volunteers are encouraged to work on local clean up schemes.
Its environment group, Atherton Green Partnership, was successful in getting borough wide waste disposal permits to support volunteers. It also ran a pilot scheme which saw dog-fouling around Howe Bridge and Central Park cut by 60 per cent.
The partnership involved local school children in creating a splendid mosaic to brighten up land on Leigh Road at the entrance to the town centre.
The forum has worked with the council’s engineers to tackle speeding traffic, and new vehicle-activated signs will soon be installed on Leigh Road, Bolton Road and Tyldesley Road.
Now the forum’s economy group is exploring ways to encourage more people to start local businesses and help others find work.
