Independence Day is coming. But forget the Fourth of July because for older people in Wigan borough this year it falls on Monday June 19th.

And it will be a great chance for the borough’s more mature residents to find out how a new government-backed project can help them help themselves.

The Partnership for Older People Project (POPP) recently got a £1.8m kick-start in the form of government funding.

The council’s department of adult services and the borough’s over 50s forum will launch POPP with a bang at Wigan Town Hall with an open invitation to all older people to come along and see what it’s all about any time between 10am and 2pm.

POPP is there to help people continue to live independently even though they may be experiencing difficulties.

Wigan Council director of adult services, Bernard Walker, explained: “POPP will provide a range of services to help older people choose where they want to live and remain in control of their own lives.

“The kind of services we are talking about include care, counselling and support through to things like help around the home and in the garden.”

There will be plenty of friendly faces around to give people information and advice along with refreshments, free-to-enter competitions and a grand balloon race.

For more information about POPP or the launch event you can telephone 01942 828746.
