Borough Life Summer 2006: Eunice is fair play champion

charity trio
Charity Trio: (l–r)Michelle Phillips of Victim Support, new Mayor Eunice Smethurst and Maureen Burgess of DIAS.

Wigan’s new Mayor is passionate about fair play. Mother of two Eunice Smethurst has a guiding principle that everyone should be given the same chances in life.

“Social inclusion is something I feel very strongly about,” she said. “I believe everyone should be encouraged to reach their potential and we should all have access to the same opportunities.”

Eunice has represented Abram for the past 10 years and juggles her civic duties with a busy family life – she especially loves spending time with her five grandchildren. The former Lamberhead Green and Abraham Guest pupil began her working life as a shopworker and went on to hold a national position with the Transport and General Workers Union. She remains a committed trade unionist to this day. During her year of office Eunice will be supporting two local charities: Victim Support and the borough’s domestic violence centre (DIAS).

“It is important that we give people who have suffered as a result of crime the support they need” said Eunice.
