Borough Life Summer 2006: Philippa leads compost crusade

Philippa Forrester
TV personality Philippa Forrester is spearheading the “compost at home” campaign.

She’s out to inspire people all over the country to compost their kitchen and garden waste – and she’s been speaking directly to Borough Life.

TV personality Philippa Forrester is leading a national campaign being run by WRAP, a council-backed recycling programme. The Robot Wars and Tomorrow’s World presenter made home composting her New Year’s resolution for 2006. And Philippa, her husband (wildlife cameraman Charlie Hamilton-James) and their two young sons are encouraging friends and family to take it up as well.

“It’s not often that you get something for nothing.”said Philippa. “But simply by recycling your fruit and vegetable peelings, along with tea bags and eggshells, you can produce a great garden fertiliser – absolutely free!

“And putting more waste in your compost bin and smaller amounts of rubbish in your dustbin means less waste going to landfill.”

Philippa holds environmental issues close to her heart. She is an avid recycler and she’d like her children to grow up in a clean environment.

“I don’t think I’ve had to change my lifestyle or attitudes since starting a family. But having children underlined to me just how important it is that we stop taking our planet for granted and all do our bit when and wherever we can.

“Home composting is one physical way to show this. My boys can see our own composter at work – it’s fascinating and we spend time talking about it. They can see how leftovers from our kitchen fill it up, how it’s transformed into compost so we can then use it. And for adults, it’s a great free way to be environmentally-friendly, and there’s no guilt with using bought-in peat.”
