Plasticine proof... Gromit opens a letter clearly addressed to Wigan.

It’s finally official….Wallace and Gromit, the world-famous plasticine animated models created by Nick Park, DO live in Wigan.

Speculation was rife when a Wigan A-Z was spotted in Wallace’s car in the latest feature, Oscar-nominated The Curse of the Were-Rabbit.

But now the truth can be revealed beyond all doubt thanks to a sharp-eyed town hall clerical officer, Hazel Lloyd. Animation fan Hazel was watching an earlier Wallace and Gromit film, The Wrong Trousers, and noticed a scene where Gromit received some birthday cards. She paused the recording, zoomed in on the address, and found it clearly says Gromit, 62 West Wallaby Street, Wigan, Lancs.

Nick Park has previously hinted that he had 1950s Wigan in mind when creating the characters. But council tourist bosses believe this is the first concrete evidence that Wigan is the world-famous duo’s hometown.

Head of tourism Keith Bergman said: “It’s another claim to fame for the town to go with our premiership success. Hopefully we’ll have loads more visitors on the back of this discovery.”
