Building work underway on the new Leigh East rugby pavilion.
College in pole position as sports village work starts
Bulldozers have moved in to start work on building the very first stage of Leigh Sports Village. And work is also set to start shortly on the new Leigh sixth form college, which is scheduled for completion early in 2007.
Included in the £6.5 million college are specialist science and language labs, media, music and IT classrooms, a performance space, art and design studios and a state of the art library. Students will also benefit from being able to use all the village’s specialist sports facilities – including the sports hall, swimming pool, football and rugby pitches and athletics track.
Leigh Sports Village is due to be finished by the end of 2007. Plans include:
- 10,000-seat stadium for the town’s major sporting clubs, including Leigh Centurions, Leigh RMI and Leigh Harriers.
- New sixth form college (part of Wigan and Leigh College).
- Residential development, including student housing.
- Public sports hall and 400m running track with covered sprinting facility and field sports area.
- New building and pitches for Leigh East amateur rugby league club.
- Swimming pool, cinema, health & fitness centre, restaurants and a ten-pin bowling alley.
- Hotel, business and conference centre.
