1.0 Background

1.1 Cabinet will recall my last report on the Regional Spatial Strategy on 1st June 2006.

1.2 Since that time a core team of officers from districts across Greater Manchester has been working on the evidence base in support of AGMA’s position; has submitted various statements of evidence; and has prepared various briefing papers for representatives at the Examination-in-Public. All AGMA’s statements of evidence and all other parties’ statements are available to view on the examination website at www.northwesteip.co.uk.

1.3 The examination started on Tuesday 31st October. It sits for 3 weeks and then adjourns until Tuesday 9th January when it will sit for a further 3 weeks. All but the final week of these 6 weeks are at the Wigan Investment Centre. The final week is at the Lake District National Park office in Kendal.

1.4 There is a programme for when each of the matters will be considered, which is attached as an appendix to this report. AGMA is being represented by a range of senior officers from the various districts.

1.5 Following the examination the Panel will submit its report to the Government Office for the North West. The Government Office will prepare changes to the regional spatial strategy which it will then place on deposit, probably late in 2007, for representations to be submitted on those changes. It is likely that the revised regional spatial strategy will be adopted in 2008.

2.0 Conclusions

2.1 AGMA is well prepared to support its position at the examination-in-public and seek changes to the regional spatial strategy in the interests of Greater Manchester and the Manchester city region.Appendix: Draft Regional Spatial Strategy Examination-in-Public Programme
