1.0 Background

1.1 The attached booklet "Maintaining a Vital Asset" introduces new codes of practice and a guidance document which have recently been published. The codes of practice cover the maintenance of the highway, highway structures and highway lighting. The guidance document is for highway infrastructure asset valuation.

1.2 The booklet also explains the importance of a well maintained highway network and points out a number of recommendations, common across the codes, which are of relevance to council members.

1.3 The documents are currently being considered to assess their impact on present working practices.

3.0 Alternative options considered and reason for the recommended option

4.0 Conclusions

4.1 The importance of the booklet and codes of practice should be understood in terms of the future management of the highway network.
