Welcome to the Project Managers Blog

Each quarter I will update this blog with progress on the Wigan Life Centre and other stories relating to this project.

Don't forget to click on the web cams so you can monitor progress on the North and South site.

If you have any comments you would like to make on any blog entries or other pages of the website then please visit the comments / questions area that is listed on the Wigan Is Changing home page.

So far so good......

Progress on site is moving really well presently, with both sites being either on time, or ahead of the scheduled Programme.

You may have seen that the South site, due to be the "Healthy Living Zone, including our new Pools, Gym facilities and Health assessment facilities, has now been completely cleared of the old buildings now, work on site presently is concentrating on progressing the new foundations necessary to hold up the new framework of the building, including grouting up old mine workings beneath the site, the new framework is due to be erected from March onwards (it's then that you will begin to see the extent of what we are building!)

You will also see the erection of a very large tower crane, around March, which at over 100 Ft high will be a considerable landmark over Wigan until the buildings are finished.

On the North site, that is due to house the various Libraries, One stop shop service and other advice agencies, work to hold up the external face of the building that we are retaining as part of the new scheme, is progressing well, you may have seen the large steel towers being installed onto the footpath around the site, these are for "façade retention" and will hold up the old building frontage until the new framework due to be installed behind is completed, after this time the towers will be removed to reveal a cleaned and restored face, with a new state of the Art building discreetly slotted in place behind

I will update again in the New Year, Best wishes for the Christmas period!

Happy New Year!

Despite the recent cold weather, works are progressing well on site. The North site housing our Information and Learning Zone, One stop Shop (a single point of contact for all Council and partner services) and other facilities listed in my last Blog and the South site, housing our "Healthy Living Zone", Pools, Leisure and Health services, are all progressing well.

On the North site, the façade retention I explained in the last Blog was being installed to hold up the decorative front and sides of the existing building is now complete. Work is underway to carefully demolish the rest of the building, ready for new foundations to be installed in advance of the new structural steel frame being installed during the Summer. More on this next time!

On the South site, the grouting of the old mine workings is complete, we are now finalising foundations and basement slabs ready for structural steelwork being erected from March onwards(watch out for the tower crane needed to lift the steelwork being erected on site at the beginning of March). It's only then you will begin to see the scale of the new building taking shape, this steelwork frame will take until the end of the Summer to complete.

Big changes on site

As you might have seen, the structural steelwork for the new "Healthy living Zone" Building that is to occupy the old Pool site has started to be erected, using the huge tower crane that can be seen from all over the Borough.

You will soon be able to appreciate the size of the new building, with the steelwork due to be finished by September. Look out for the installation of a huge "truss" that will eventually span over the pool viewing gallery, this is due to be lifted into place using what is known as a "tandem lift" using the crane on site and a huge mobile crane. This will happen around August/September time, but I can update you on this next time

On the North site next to the Wiend, the "Information and learning" zone building works are also progressing well, demolitions of the old buildings are complete and all the new foundations needed for the new steel frame are underway. Another tower crane will be on the skyline from 17th April onwards and will still be on site towards Christmas.

Summers here, even though the sunshine isn't!

Despite the recent rain work is progressing really well and this month represents a major milestone as our contractors are hoping to complete the structure of the pool building on the South Site. Work has already started to "clad" the exterior of the building in cement-fibre boards before the finished terracotta tiles and windows are fitted.

On the North Site 70% of the structural steelwork is completed and if you look click on the webcam on the Wigan Is Changing home page you can clearly see the concrete retaining wall that will eventually form the back of the library area wall.

More updates coming soon as the building continues to take shape.
