“An extended school is a school that recognises that it cannot work alone in helping children & young people to achieve their potential, and therefore decides to work in partnership with other agencies that have an interest in outcomes for children, young people and the local community” (DfES 2004)
Extended Services Team
The Extended Services Team support schools in the Wigan Borough to achieve the Extended Services Core Offer within a cluster of schools in a geographical area.
The Core Offer is as follows:
- Childcare (in primary and special schools)
- A varied menu of activities including study support, sport and music clubs
- Swift and easy access to targeted and specialist services
- Parenting support including family learning, and
- Community access to facilities including adult and family learning, ICT and sports facilities.
Schools are not expected to provide these services alone, or necessarily to deliver them on site. Instead, they should work in partnership with other schools and agencies, including voluntary and community organisations, signposting existing services where appropriate. Schools are expected to consult widely with pupils, families, their own staff and the wider community to identify priorities and needs.
By 2010 all parents of primary aged children will be able to have access to affordable childcare in or through their school. Childcare will be available from 8:00am to 6:00pm all year round. By 2010 all secondary schools will be open from 8:00am to 6:00pm all year round. Schools will offer a range of activities for young people. Many schools are already providing these extended services and have been doing so for some time. Schools will be able to develop the services which best meet the needs of their community. They will be able to do this by consulting with parents and involving them in planning.
