Advice and Guidance

Although the reasons for climate change are still being debated we have all seen the increasing risks from wetter winters and summer flash floods. Even in our borough, roads and homes have flooded and local rivers burst their banks. Even tiny changes to our climate means that it’s likely to become a more frequent concern.

Wigan Council works closely with partners in the Wigan Resilience Forum such as the Environment Agency, the emergency services and United Utilities to plan for and respond to flooding incidents. We are linked to the national Flood Forecasting Centre's warning service to let us know, as far as is predictable, if there an increased chance of severe weather coming our way.

We also work with community groups and the voluntary sector to help deliver greater individual and community resilience .

Facebook Flood Alerts

The new Environment Agency Facebook application, Flood Alerts, shows all flood warnings that are in force across England and Wales. It is the first service of this type and allows Facebook users to get posts on their Facebook wall when a Flood Alert, Warning or Severe Flood Warning has been issued for their location.

Flood Warnings

The flood warning widget, shown to the right, provides live information about the Environment Agency flood alerts and flood warnings that are in place in the North West region.

The widget retrieves information from the Environment Agency’s website and provides the latest summary of flood alerts and warnings. The widget will update at the same frequency as the flood information on the Environment Agency website.

The Civil Contingencies Team plan and take part in Greater Manchester and local exercises to ensure we are prepared to respond to flooding emergencies.

If your house is in immediate danger of flooding

  • Focus on the safety of you and your family
  • Put people before property.

The Flood Protection Association (external link) also provides help and support. They aim to provide a single source of flood related information, latest flood warnings and a special helpline.
