The environment we live in is key to how we feel about our neighbourhoods, if there are broken windows, graffiti, litter and dog fouling it shows that we don’t care.

In these neighbourhoods crime and the fear of crime is high, other neighbourhoods which are clean and green makes us feel better about the environment we live in, reported crime is often lower and people feel safer in their communities.

To support our actions in tackling environmental crime we are using images from CCTV and individual still photographs taken by Council Authorised Officers

Information on CCTV

Closed Circuit Television was first introduced in Wigan in 1991 as an effective tool to prevent and detect crime. The CCTV Monitoring Suite operates 24/7 365 days a year and is responsible for 663 cameras borough wide.

The system covers town centres in Wigan, Leigh, Ashton, Atherton, Hindley, Golbourne, Tyldesley as well as Norley Hall and Scholes. CCTV plays a key role in the detection and investigation of Criminal and Anti-Social behaviour.

All CCTV footage is recorded on to digital hard drives and kept for 31 days, incidents including underage sales, criminal damage, assaults are reported to the relevant section or organisation for investigation.

CCTV actively works in Partnership with Greater Manchester Police, Greater Manchester Fire & Rescue Service, Greater Manchester Passenger & Transport, Trading Standards, Licensing, Pub & Shop Watch, Wigan & Leigh Housing etc. The partnership work together to support each other in achieving the overall aims and objectives of reducing crime and the fear of crime in the Borough.
