Celebrating difference – Group offers support for Leigh children

Tuesday 21st February 2012 (ref: 40/2012)

A new support group for children with autism and related conditions is opening at Leigh’s Bedford and Higher Folds Childrens’ Centre this weekend.

“We’re Not Different You Are”, will hold its first session on Saturday 25 February from 10am-3pm.

The first session will be an informal drop-in and an opportunity for parents and carers to speak to staff about what they would like the group to offer.

The group aims to provide fun interactive sessions for children and their families as well as an environment for children to make new friends.

Visitors will also have the chance to meet the team and other professional agencies including More than Words, Embrace, Short Breaks and Love Autism.

Wigan Council’s Cabinet Member for Young People Cllr Susan Loudon says: “This group will provide a great service for families and carers with children affected by autism. It will also be a chance for the children to socialise and gain confidence.”

The group will meet on the last Saturday of each month from 1-3pm and will be based within St Thomas school hall, Astley Street, Leigh, WN7 2AS.
