It’s not a fashion tip but it is great news for keen recyclers across the borough because it means there’s a new bin on the way.
And the question from the council’s waste team is: How big do you want it?
Last year the council began trials of a new brown bin service in various parts of the borough and rolled out more brown bins earlier this year.
They take glass, cans and some plastics and are collected once every two weeks on the same day as your existing recycling collections. Wigan Council Waste Management Officer, Claire Dunn, pictured right, said:“There is a big demand already for the new brown bins.
“We’ve had people asking us when they will get one and we are hoping that every suitable home in the borough will have one by the end of 2010.”
The council is offering everyone a choice of sizes for the new brown bins – either standard wheelie bin size or a half-sized one.
Claire says: “We asked people what they thought of the size of the bins and most were happy with the standard size, but some wanted a smaller bin. We’ve found the half-sized bin suits people living alone. Before their new brown bin is delivered residents will receive a leaflet. If people would like to receive a smaller bin there will be details on the leaflet as to how they can let us know in advance.”

What can you put in your brown bin?
- Glass bottles and jars of any colour and type.
- Plastic bottles and pots– including drink bottles, washing-up liquid and shampoo bottles, sandwich cases.
- Empty aerosols, food and drink cans and tins and foil takeaway containers.
