Final Consultation 2013

The Transport Strategy is now reaching its final stages of preparation.  It underwent a major public consultation exercise in 2011 (see below) and now the revised draft is ready to be shared before being finally approved by Cabinet in March.

Wigan Borough on the Move comprises a detailed strategy report and action plan.  We welcome any further comments you may have on the documents below.  They highlight the role of transport to delivering economic prosperity in the borough over the next 15 years.  They also set out priorities on activities such as rail development, congestion measures, bus service improvement, transport integration, new road projects, new cycling projects and developments, car parking and walking.

Transport Consultation 2011

Our major public consultation exercise has helped shape the future of transport in Greater Manchester's biggest borough.

We know that everyone has something to say about transport, and we recognise that there's room for improvement.   From July to October 2011, we discussed transport with individuals, local communities and businesses from across the Borough.  We listened to their views about:

• current journeys, travel within the Borough, and public transport provision;
• future travel requirements, in light of higher fuel costs, health issues, and impacts of climate change; and,
• what our visions, aspirations and priorities should be for the next 20 years.

What you said has helped paint an overall picture of what local communities need and want, and has enabled us to influence decisions and lobby for improvements on your behalf.

We produced a consultation report and asked people to provide feedback and comments.  The consultation was very widely publicised and we also directly engaged with a variety of different people and groups:

• drop-in sessions at libraries and shopping centres;
• directly approached passengers at stops and stations, as well as on buses and trains;
• directly approached motorists in car parks;
• asked questions on Twitter and Facebook, as well as the Council's website;
• asked Citizens' Panel to complete a detailed questionnaire;
• visited care homes and day centres;
• visited nurseries to talk with working parents;
• held a workshop with young people drawn from across the Borough;
• held a conference for key stakeholders and businesses; and,
• had a stall at Expo Twenty 11 to engage with local businesses.

We received about 2,000 responses - thank you.  This feedback is now informing the Borough's emerging transport strategy and will specifically impact on our priorities and what key actions we will need to take.  This will then enable us to challenge and influence decisions, to develop a better transport system.  We will ensure that we provide the networks required to connect people to opportunities, and promote ecenomic regeneration.
