  • About the Borough
    With a population of about 300,000 across an area of 77 square miles, Wigan is one of the largest metropolitan districts in England. The borough is based around the two main towns of Wigan and Leigh, and several smaller towns and villages of the former Lancashire coalfield. Wigan is the most westerly district of the county of Greater Manchester, although many local people (and the Royal Mail) prefer to consider the area part of Lancashire.

    The Civil Partnership Act came into force on 5 December 2005. Any same sex couples wishing to form a civil partnership will be able to give notice of their intention to register from that date.

  • Discretionary Housing Payments
    Discretionary Housing Payments are a type of extra benefit. Discretionary means that the Council is allowed to decide in which circumstances this extra benefit will be paid. This extra benefit is intended to help those people most in need of help with their housing costs such as rent and Council Tax.
