As the Wigan Central Area Action Plan is developed, it will be subject to a sustainability appraisal to ensure that sustainability issues are taken fully into consideration throughout the process of preparing the plan.
Carrying out a sustainability appraisal enables us to ensure that the likely significant environmental, social and economic effects of the plan are identified and considered.
Sustainability appraisal is a continuous process that informs firstly the evidence gathering stage of a plan's preperation and subsequently the formulation of alternative options and the preparation of the preferred strategy. It enables potential adverse impacts to be identified at an early stage and where possible avoided, or compensated for.
The first stage of the sustainability appraisal process for the Wigan Central Area Action Plan is to produce a Scoping Report (.pdf, 424KB) accompanied by a Non-Technical Summary (.pdf, 360KB). The purpose of this report is to set out the initial context and findings of the sustainability appraisal and the proposed approach to the rest of the appraisal. The aim is to ensure that the appraisal will be comprehensive and address all relevant sustainability issues and objectives, taking account of input from key stakeholders and consultation bodies at an early stage in the process. The Scoping Report is out for consultation from 28th October 2011 and will close at 5pm on 2nd December 2011.
